Knoppix as my main PC. Its robust since you cannot corrupt the operating system. Upgrade all applications in one go with a new dvd image.

My standard boot line is (in case I forget it) 

knoppix dma lang=uk bootfrom=/dev/hda2/511.iso home=/media/hdb1/knoppix.img

I boot from CD, but have the DVD image available in order to use the bootfrom=/dev/hda2/511.iso option to boot from it.
