20060710 - This model is very nice! It allows you to start with the basics then taylor for your needs. Keep up the great work!

20060718 - Also take a look at http://live.debian.net/ . It is very nice as well.

Modified kernels and initrd ?

Yes, this worked fine to set up a knoppix from scratch. I had to run it on a debian system first; then I got something that I could 'chroot' into under RedHat.

A few extra items I would like help with ...

  • If I want to plug in a modified kernel (built for '686 and maybe with the 'no timer tick' patch), what do I have to do ? Presumably I need to build the kernel, make an 'initrd', and rebuild the boot directory; can you do me a 'howto' ?
I can work on a modified and or custom kernel & initrd howto, I've been meaning to complete the Knoppix 64 from debootstrap for some time.

  • I would like to make a modified 'linuxrc' and plug a statically-linked 'busybox' into the initrd (so I can poke around before the 'KNOPPIX' file is loaded). Again, can you do me a 'howto' ?
I'd suggest learning bash scripting. The linuxrc script is commented very well.
(see Adv. bash scripting howto: http://tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/ )
If you have some programming experience, it can be fun to customize.
I'd suggest using a virtual machine and try some things.
I've had many "bad isos" from seeing what works and what does not.

  • During the setup, I got some dialog boxes popping up. Is it possible to turn them off (so that I could run a setup unattended, or as a batch job) ?
Absolutely. But i'mre not entirely sure what dialog boxes you are referring to.

  • Can I take an existing Knoppix remaster (I am thinking of the ones from http://www.ofset.org/ ), unpack it, bring it up to date with 'apt-get', re-pack it, and expect it to have a reasonable chance of working ? If not, what kinds of things am I likely to need to attend to ?
a custom knoppix can be changed in many ways. apt-get may update some startup scripts.
It's fine if you do this, but you may have to go back and ensure the startup process has not been modified.
I'm working on a more customized howto, that should cover some of these startup scripts to watch for.

Thanks very much for the cookbook.

What is it for

Please could you add a description as to what this is for, what does it do.

could you be specific? there are a lot of things on Knoppix, explaining each file, program and or script can take some time.
