The original Knoppix is speed optimized (you can think of it as "defragmenting for CD"). The most Remastering FAQs and scripts do NOT speed optimize the remaster. Therefore, the original Knoppix runs faster from the CD than most remasters! http://mailman.linuxtag.org/pipermail/debian-knoppix/2003-January/001593.html

# I've read the HOWTO, but it doesn't tell how to customize the KDE desktop, panel, and startup programs. I've found that after I chroot, I can see my KDE changes in '''/ramdisk/home/knoppix/.kde/''' and I copied those to '''/etc/skel/.kde/''' and to '''/home/knoppix/.kde/''' but they seem to be ignored. What do I need to do?

Overview

There are (at least) two ways to customise Knoppix and make it behave differently when it boots.

  • Configuration - Easy, cheap and non-invasive. Make changes to local configuration in /etc and load on boot with myconfig= switch.

Many common customisations can be carried out without re-mastering. Consider using saveconfig to store local modifications before learning about re-mastering. See this page for more information: Configuration Howto

  • Re-mastering - More complex and expensive. Change the contents of the distribution and burn a new CD.

General howto information is available here: Knoppix Remastering Howto / Knoppix Remastering Howto Deutsch
