In the case of Knoppix compression is used to put more applications and data on the Knoppix ISO Image that is burned to a CD-R disk. The Cloop file system has compression at its heart.

- Tar is a packager.
- Commandline options to tar allow you to choose two compression formats: gzip and bzip2.
One can compress and uncompress files using File Roller application. Later releases of Nautilus have File Roller available as a right click option.
