Compression is a handy feature. A large bundle of files or one large single file can be shrunk to save disk space. Sometimes the file will then be able to be sent through email. In the case of Knoppix compression is used to put more applications and data on the Knoppix ISO Image that is burned to a CD-R disk. The Cloop file system has compression at its heart.

Here are some ideas to compare.

  • Tar is a packager.
  • Commandline options to tar allow you to choose two compression formats: gzip and bzip2.

One can compress and uncompress files using File Roller application. Later releases of Nautilus have File Roller available as a right click option.
